The Social Problem

Only around 40% of the people in Bangladesh have access to grid electricity. Especially the rural population suffers from the lack of access to affordable, clean and efficient energy. The majority of the 162 million inhabitants live in rural areas and need to rely on kerosene for lighting and cooking, which is neither cost-effective nor environmentally friendly.

The Idea

Grameen Shakti was elected to address these social problems through environmentally sustainable solutions, such as small solar home systems, biogas plants and improved cooking stoves.

Selling rather expensive products to mainly poor customers, Grameen Shakti had to rely on an innovative distribution and after-sales system as well as microfinance to create demand for their products. To date, they have sold more than 1 million solar home systems in Bangladesh.
